Gareth Ward, Ynyshir Restaurant

Gareth Ward is Chef Owner of Ynyshir Restaurant and Rooms, a Two Michelin Star Restaurant located in the idyllic Welsh countryside.

Born and raised in County Durham, Gareth made the move to Wales in 2013 to head the Ynyshir Restaurant kitchen with then owners Mr & Mrs Reen.

In his first full year at Ynyshir, Gareth and his team were awarded their first Michelin Star, and Gareth was named “Chef to Watch” by The Good Food Guide.

In collaboration with his long-time partner Amelia Eiríksson, Ynyshir has changed exponentially since they took over control and part ownership in 2016.

With a background in Architecture, Amelia set out to redesign the 15th century manor house, incorporating Gareth’s ideas and bringing them to life. Overtime they have implemented their interior design vision and created a space that aligned with Gareth’s menu and their own personal style.

Lockdown provided the unusual opportunity to renovate on a large scale. With the restaurant closed, work began to transform the exterior. With uncertainty within the hospitality industry, Gareth doubled down and backed his restaurant. Expansion began and three tipis and a large stretch tent were placed within the 14 acres of lush landscape. This expansion allowed Gareth and the team to generate income and prepare for a reopening of the industry once again.

Since 2013 Gareth has put his heart & soul into Ynyshir by creating something truly unique and authentic to him. In 2022 Ynyshir was awarded its second Michelin Star, making it the first and only restaurant in Wales to hold this accolade, solidifying his place amongst industry giants. The recognition inspired the team and Gareth continued to create and evolve. Following an epic year, Gareth retained his second star at the 2023 Michelin Awards, continuing to inspire and champion the fine dining industry.
